Rob Wasserman ‎– Duets

I read about Rob’s duet with Jennifer Warnes “Ballad of the Runaway Horse” (track six, written by Leonard Cohen) on this recording in a couple of audiophile articles, so I had to buy it.

Overall, Duets is an excellent album with outstanding production quality and an interesting mix of collaborations and musical styles. As it turns out, though, my favorite track after listening to the album a few times is the rendition of “Over the Rainbow” with Rob on bass and Stephane Grappelli on violin. From a musical perspective, I find “Angel Eyes” with Cheryl Bentyne and their interplay between voice and bass to be captivating.

If you’re looking for an audiophile test LP, I think there are better recordings out there for putting your system through its paces. While a wonderful piece, “Ballad” is a bit over-hyped in the audiophile community. That said, Rob’s bass performances are a great test of bass on any system. I like Chesky’s Ultimate Demonstration Disc as a benchmark, plus a few other favorite pieces. If you’re a Jennifer Warnes fan, then I’d suggest “somewhere, somebody” on “The Hunter”.

If you’re looking for an impressive, diverse and engaging jazz compilation, though, I’ve enjoyed Rob Wasserman’s album immensely. It’s playing in my living room as I write…
